Shōzui Motif (Shōzui Mon’yō):The Shōzui motif refers to a type of auspicious decorative pattern used in Japanese and Chinese art, especially ceramics. The term “shōzui” (祥瑞) means “good omen” or “auspicious sign.” These motifs typically consist of symbolic elements such as phoenixes, dragons, clouds, treasures, and other traditional symbols that represent blessings, good fortune, longevity, and prosperity. Originally inspired by Chinese Ming Dynasty porcelain designs, Shōzui patterns became popular in Japan during the Edo period and were especially used on high-quality ceramics like Arita ware. The motifs are not fixed but rather a combination of lucky symbols arranged to convey positive meanings.

Mino-yaki (Mino ware) is a traditional type of Japanese pottery produced in Gifu Prefecture. It has a history of over 1,300 years and is known for its diversity in styles and designs. Unlike some other types of Japanese ceramics that follow strict traditions, Mino ware is highly adaptable and has evolved over time to meet different artistic and functional needs.

One of its key characteristics is the variety of glazes used, such as Shino, Oribe, and Setoguro. Each glaze creates unique textures and colors, making Mino ware highly valued for both daily use and artistic expression. Additionally, Mino ware is often lightweight and durable, making it practical for everyday life.

Today, Mino ware continues to be produced using both traditional and modern techniques, ensuring its relevance in contemporary pottery.

THE BEAUTY OF THE UNEVENNESS CAUSED BY HANDMADE

The ceramic pieces are made of specially formulated clay in order to preserve their natural texture, unlike pure white porcelain. Due to the characteristics of clay or kiln, there may be black iron powder or brownish components floating on the surface. Each piece is unique, and no two are exactly the same. We hope you enjoy this unique characteristic of the ceramic.
The glaze used to preserve the texture, vivid colors, and durability of the ceramics have been developed by artisans through a long process of trial and error. In order to maintain the handmade texture, all glazes are applied by hand by artisans and fired at the optimal temperature. In this process, there may be small holes caused by air bubbles or traces of glaze that have naturally flowed out. Even in such cases, we remove any products with problems in use, so you can use our products safely. Our products are made by hand by artisans with the techniques of the mold and the potter's wheel. Although this method of production is very inefficient in today's mechanized world, we believe you can feel the full warmth of the pieces. Each piece may have a slight difference in shape and size, but this is part of the beauty and uniqueness of handmade items. We hope you embrace the handcrafted elements.
