BIZENYAKI “HIDASUKI” Plate 00048 MST071

“Hidasuki” is a traditional Bizen ware technique in which straw is wrapped around the pottery before firing. During firing, the components of the straw react with the clay, creating red markings and unique patterns on the surface.

The patterns are naturally formed and differ from piece to piece.

BIZENYAKI

Bizen-Yaki (Bizen ware) is a traditional Japanese pottery that originates from Bizen in Okayama Prefecture. It is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and is known for its rustic beauty, natural textures, and unglazed surfaces. Bizen ware has a history of over 1,000 years and is highly valued for its unique aesthetic, which comes from being fired at high temperatures without using glaze.

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Bizen ware is the natural patterns created during the firing process. Potters place pieces in wood-fired kilns for long periods (often over 10 days), and the ashes, flames, and heat create various marks and color variations—such as reddish browns, grays, and even black tones. No two pieces are exactly alike, and this unpredictability is part of Bizen’s charm.

Because Bizen ware is unglazed, the clay’s quality is especially important. The local clay used is rich in iron and gives Bizen ware its warm, earthy feel. It is also highly durable and suitable for items like tea wares, sake cups, flower vases, and even cooking vessels.

Bizen ware reflects the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which values simplicity, imperfection, and the beauty of natural aging.

THE BEAUTY OF THE UNEVENNESS CAUSED BY HANDMADE

The ceramic pieces are made of specially formulated clay in order to preserve their natural texture, unlike pure white porcelain. Due to the characteristics of clay or kiln, there may be black iron powder or brownish components floating on the surface. Each piece is unique, and no two are exactly the same. We hope you enjoy this unique characteristic of the ceramic.
The glaze used to preserve the texture, vivid colors, and durability of the ceramics have been developed by artisans through a long process of trial and error. In order to maintain the handmade texture, all glazes are applied by hand by artisans and fired at the optimal temperature. In this process, there may be small holes caused by air bubbles or traces of glaze that have naturally flowed out. Even in such cases, we remove any products with problems in use, so you can use our products safely. Our products are made by hand by artisans with the techniques of the mold and the potter's wheel. Although this method of production is very inefficient in today's mechanized world, we believe you can feel the full warmth of the pieces. Each piece may have a slight difference in shape and size, but this is part of the beauty and uniqueness of handmade items. We hope you embrace the handcrafted elements.
